Building GARNOME could be problematic. We have not ported all the GNOME2 components to FreeBSD yet. However, this sounds like you might be running into a problem I saw with pkgconfig on 4.x. Try install the latest pkgconfig-0.11.0 from /usr/ports/devel/pkgconfig. This should get you a little further, but you may still run into problems.
