Oh, I just remembered.  XVid compiles by default with none of the
optimizations turned on (like the custom assembly and even -O).  I
didn't notice that the first time and got really awful performace out of
it (couldn't encode half frames at realtime!).  Once I beat the makefile
a bit and made it compile with the custom assembly and with the
optimization flags turned on I managed to get good performance out of
it.
