(4.1.1 installed fine.) It turned out to be some kind of resource/irq conflict. I found that disabling the plip and some parallel port device interfaces in the pre-installation kernel configuration took care of the problem. You may have to selectively disable other devices, your mileage may vary. Hope it helps.
