It does a lot of special-casing when it's being run as PID 1. However, Darren, /stand/sysinstall doesn't do anything overly magic. You might even be able to use its disk editor in standalone mode now, if you don't prefer the spartanic disklabel(8) user interface. The distributions itself are simple split .tar.gz files.
