Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-isp@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Is anyone else seeing the root nameservers timing out when queried? Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I've tried this from our network in the UK, and a couple of our sites in the States. Same intermittent failure. Now, I know (think) that under normal circumstances when doing a name lookup (gethostbyname) the resolver should try other servers, and so the query should eventually succeed, but one of our customers is having difficulty getting to our site www.mintel.com - I don't know what OS / proxy software they are using - or even if they're running their own NS, but I think their problems _may_ be related to the problems with the name servers. If anyone else is experiencing similar problems I would appreciate a shout. [ I know, I know we ought to have _our_ name servers on different networks - I've been trying to register one of our other hosts in the US with Network Solutions for this purpose, but my emails seem to have gone into a black hole. However - this client is in the UK, and (fairly) closely connected to us, and both of our servers _seem_ to be OK. ] host -d -t ns microsoft.com A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET ;; res_querydomain(A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, , 1, 1) ;; res_query(A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, 1, 1) ;; res_mkquery(0, A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, 1, 1) ;; res_send() ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 27030 ;; flags: rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, type = A, class = IN ;; Querying server (# 1) address = 127.0.0.1 ;; got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 27030 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 12, ADDITIONAL: 12 ;; A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, type = A, class = IN A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. 6d21h16m36s IN A 198.41.0.4 NET. 5d20h20m42s IN NS C.ROOT-SERVERS.NET.
