cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf
(editor cmd here) (kernel conf)
config (kernel conf)
cd /usr/src
make buildkernel KERNCONF=(kernel conf)
make installkernel KERNCONF=(kernel conf)

Also, read /usr/src/UPDATING
and check out the hand book too.
