Sure it is changable:

wb ~: sysctl -a | grep compat
compat.linux.osname: FreeBSD
compat.linux.osrelease: 4.5-PRERELEASE
compat.linux.oss_version: 198144
wb ~: 

It makes things like Netscape leave FreeBSD iso Linux in the logs of
the webservers ;) I never saw it break anything.
