Well if WINE's numbering scheme goes as I remember it the version in the ports is about 2 months older than the one he downloaded. Alot changes in each individual release of WINE. However, if he is doing something that isn't critical to the newer 20001202 version then he should be fine. For instance take Starcraft if you go to some of the WINE homepages. With different versions of WINE different functionality was gained or lost depending on which version was run.
