I have to take it back, while single disk worked fine as soon as we 
tried raidz2 we get:

    Initializing modules: ZFS UFS
ZFS: i/o error - all block copies unavailable
ZFS: i/o error - all block copies unavailable
ZFS: can't find root dsl_dir
ZFS: can't find root filesystem
...

So some more work to be done yet it seems.
