I know its easy to do that, but there still is a big difference between
an applet and an application; to expand on this, there's a big difference
in how they're executed and what executes them and what they're allowed
to do.

You can try putting the applet in your CLASSPATH environment setting,
making it trusted. Netscape will still create a SecurityManager for
these, but if you use the 'file:\\' URL specifier you should be OK. If you
want to test it on IE 3.0, God forbid, you can install the classes in, roughly, C:\WINDOWS\JAVA\CLASSES\classes.zip using no
compression.
Alternatively, the classpath can be edited in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\JavaVM.
Sorry, still can't find the appletviewer setting to alter. Maybe it was
HotJava?!
