No, it doesn't.  You must have misinterpreted what it was doing.

GCC 2.95.3 also exists in the ports collection.  It's much better to
install that than to compile it yourself; you may have problems
compiling old FreeBSD source with the newer compiler, so you don't
want to shoot yourself in the foot.
