Its "stand alone" in the sense that when its installed in a common or garden variety PC it will do as much as any other operating system if you are willing to persevere long enough.
Whilst there are probably heaps of people using it in a standalone situation, the strength of FreeBSD is as an extremely stable server ..... I prefer other things for day to day desktop use.
