Modify /etc/rc.conf and set pccard_enable to NO.  pccard is the laptop
PCMCIA insertable card controller....

That was easy; too bad you didn't write it two days earlier, or I could
have answered someone else's question :)

The DHCP client for FreeBSD will take care of this for you.
