To answer my own question here, that is the correct alteration to rc.conf to alter the duplex settings, and ... ifconfig rl0 -mediaopt full-duplex (change rl0 for your adapter) ..at the shell will alter it without a reboot (which is proabbly obvious to everyone except me :+) ).
