With kdm (kde's replacement for xdm) you don't need to add individual .xsession files: you can configure the system kdmrc and xsession files in such a way that the user can select whatever sort of session s/he wants (kde, gnome, failsafe, whatever) from a pull-down menu on the kdm login screen directly.
