Thanks for the pointers! I was able to get a trace and narrowed it down the malloc call in echo.c which was being compiled without the appropriate kernel headers, thus referencing the userland malloc. Some #ifdef and Makefile changes has everything working smoothly. Many thanks to everyone who replied. My project[1] finally has a proper echo canceller.
