I ran the 3.0.x branch and I've found it to be stable for the most part, however character conversion (needed to setup file sharing for Macs) did not work, and neither did the vfs modules I needed. If you take a look on a samba roadmap, they expect stability only in the 3.x series of samba. Samba 3 is still for brave ones or for those who need new features badly :) Cheers, Timur.
