Xdm runs fine w/ a tty marked secure. Do you see the xdm login window? When you log in what happens? Have you switched to a different tty (ctrl-alt-f#) to login via the console? My guess is that you don't have your .xsession marked executable but it's hard to determine from what you've written. Change to a console window and chmod +x .xsession and try again. If that doesn't work we'll need to know more to determine the problem.
