The easy way is:

cd /usr/ports/editors/openoffice-1.1 (or -2.0-devel)
make install

The only manual intervention will be to fetch the Java sources if
you don't have jdk-1.4 installed.

(And thanks to the FreeBSD port maintainers for making it this simple).
