Please help me out here.

Seems as if more stuff is broken on this box. I tried installing
apsfilter7.2.2 but it barfs on some /compat/linux error for acroread4:

configuring apsfilter version 7.2.2-stable...

    mandir		/usr/local/man
    docdir		/usr/local/share/doc
			(will become /usr/local/share/doc/apsfilter)

    shell		/usr/local/bin/bash
    awk			/usr/bin/awk
    sendmail		/usr/sbin/sendmail
    printcap		/etc/printcap
    spooldir		/var/spool/lpd

Now run "make install" to install apsfilter.
