I too have recently had a terrible time trying to install via FTP from ANY site other than the 'home'. And, while I'd really like to have FreeBSD on my machine at work, I've given up trying. After many failed attempts, it just wasn't worth all the wasted time. I get great response from the site up in New England (wherever it is; Vermont I think) but can't get an install going from it for whatever reason.
