As I said, it does not really matter.  Any type could theoretically be the
return-type of some function.  In the SYNOPSIS, though, where you describe
external variables, I would use the following construct:

.Sh SYNOPSIS
.Vt type Va variable ;
.Vt type Va variable ;

I don't see the problem with using Vt over Ft for variables, it is just
a question of taste.
