Well, not 100% the same, but FreeBSD is 4.4BSD-Lite-derived.

I don't know who is currently holds the copyright on UNIX(tm). And the actual 
UNIX is most likely THE original AT&T thing, wroten ages ago.

FreeBSD is a BSD-derived UNIX system, that's true.

FreeBSD 2.2.6 is a descendant of 4.4BSD. They just happens to have different 
versioning ;-)
