How full is that partition?
Generally this happens when a partition starts to
fill up, and the system takes additional time to
save files in a more space-conservative way.  Thus
your drive performance is starting to suffer to
ensure that you'll have plenty of space availalbe.

See if there's anything you can delete from /var
to free up space.  If not, consider a larger /var
partition.
