as i remember ever since the netscape could use css, it was done w/ 
javascript ... that's why it's both a blessing from my point of view
as a user and a curse from developer's point... as you have already
experienced.

you may find details on on some websites or may be in some 
comp.infosystems.www.* newsgroup.
