It sounds like you've commented out the line that says
'bind' in your /etc/host.conf file.  The file (/etc/host.conf)
also has to be world readable.  Programs using gethostbyname
need to have the line 'bind' in the host.conf file in order
to do DNS lookups.  nslookup is by default a name server
lookup (DNS), so it uses bind no matter what's listed in the
host.conf file.
