nslookup  -q=txt -class=CHAOS version.bind. <host.where.bind.runs.tld>

and/or

[frank@minax etc]# /usr/local/sbin/named -v
BIND 9.2.2


the first might be forged since the bind/dns admin can put
sth like:

version                 "foobar";

into his named.conf
