Hi

The command should be
tar xf <file.tar>
if it's a .tar.gz or .tgz
tar zxf <file.tar.gz or file.tgz>
(-> man tar should help)

pkg_add is only for packages (extension: .tgz) - but not all .tgz are
fbsd packages...
