ashift 12 should be fine, I think. My ramblings about write amplification
were rather dealing with the (ill-set) write pattern we have. There is not
much you can do to prevent it in that case (many large files that get few
bytes added every few minutes - the drives rewrite at least an erase block
size worth of data per file then).
