Read isn't a command.  read is:

  $ read response
  foo
  $ echo $response
  foo
  $

If you're going to say ``yes, but it doesn't work for csh'', OK,
that's correct, but the script I posted specified /bin/sh.

Yes, I do care.  I care enough to check things before I post incorrect
