That is correct behavior for PPP. You could use CHAP or PAP so they don't have to manually login to a terminal and avoid seeing such character. If they exit their terminal program <minicom or whatever> and launch pppd on their client machines with the correct parameters <I forget what they are> they should get a connection. This is exactly how my college PPP connections were for a while on the AIX systems I used to dial into.
