There is no README file yet (shame on me indeed) but the > design is pretty simple and clear, I believe. IIRC, BEST has the source code to their own UPS daemon on their web site. (http://www.bestpower.com) I downloaded it a few months ago, and I was able to compile it with a few modifications under -stable. (I doubt it would be any different for -current.) The code looked sorta SysVish, but it seemed to run. I never did get it to talk to my UPS, though, 'cause I think you need a special cable to talk to the UPS. I tried both a 'normal' serial cable, and a null serial cable. Their web site seems to be down at the moment, so I can't verify that the source code to their UPS daemon is still there. If anyone wants the source, I can put it up for ftp tonight when I get home.
