I haven't used ncftp in quite some time and I still find myself using 'lls' in other clients ;-) actually, i just tested it and you can type '!ls', but 'lls' still is faster (no shift, and 2 strokes on the same key), but it's still a lot more convenient than exiting the ftp connection, running 'ls' and then 'ftp' again! : ^ ) thx for that tip!
