just upgraded from 3.3-release to 3.3-stable via /stand/sysinstall. I also installed proftpd which uses PAM. Anonymous users can log into. But regular users cannot. These errors are produced. Dec 6 23:45:56 synergy proftpd[3717]: unable to resolve symbol: pam_sm_open_session Dec 6 23:45:56 synergy proftpd[3717]: unable to resolve symbol: pam_sm_close_session Dec 6 23:45:56 synergy proftpd[3717]: PAM(dan): Authentication failure f I follow the suggestions found in the mailing list archives and http://hamster.wibble.org/proftpd/proftpdfaq-8.html and remove the entry from /etc/pam.conf (third line shown below), I get the following errors: ftp auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass ftp account required pam_unix.so try_first_pass #ftp session required pam_unix.so try_first_pass Dec 6 23:52:48 synergy proftpd[3727]: PAM(dan): Authentication failure Dec 6 23:52:48 synergy proftpd[3727]: USER dan: incorrect password from mybox.mydomain.org [10.0.0.20] to 10.0.0.100:21 However, if I add the following option to /usr/local/etc/proftpd.conf: AuthPAMAuthoritative off the logins work but these errors remain: Dec 7 00:04:07 synergy proftpd[3779]: PAM(dan): Authentication failure I think that PAM isn't working here at all. -- Dan Langille - DVL Software Limited [I'm looking for more work] The FreeBSD Diary - http://www.freebsddiary.org/freebsd/ NZ FreeBSD User Group - http://www.nzfug.nz.freebsd.org/ The Racing System - http://www.racingsystem.com/racingsystem.htm unix @ home - http://www.unixathome.org/ To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
