It would be safer to do something like this:
cd /
mkdir newdev
cd newdev
cp /dev/MAKEDEV .
/bin/sh MAKEDEV all
<follow the steps below for your disks>
cd /
mv dev olddev && mv newdev dev
Then you should be ok.
