Ah-ha! That's all I needed to get DES working ... Is this the -current man page? Also, the handbook still talks about symlinking libraries ... that's how I got onto that track. Thanks, Erick (and others who made helpful suggestions) Tom Haapanen tomh@metrics.com -----Original Message----- From: Erick Mechler [mailto:emechler@techometer.net] Sent: Friday, 12 October, 2001 14:28 To: Haapanen, Tom Cc: freebsd-security@FreeBSD.ORG Subject: Re: FreeBSD 4.4 and DES :: Has anyone successfully got DES working with FreeBSD 4.4? I need this to :: get FrontPage 2002 server extensions running ... The correct place to make the change is in login.conf. From the manpage, under the AUTHENTICATION section... passwd_format string md5 The encryption format that new or changed passwords will use. Valid values include "des", "md5" and "blf". NIS clients using a non-FreeBSD NIS server should probably use "des". The libcrypt libraries that ship with 4.4 (actually, they were committed sometime in 4.3-STABLE, I do believe) contain the code for both md5 and des, so there's no need to have separate libraries anymore (see crypt(3)). I might suggest creating a separate login class for your FrontPage users that uses des, and continue using md5 for everyone else.
