I'm not sure how it might work exactly, but the idea is that maintained pages corresponding to recent releases get better scores than unmaintained and ancient pages, such as the FreeBSD 2.2 Release Notes. (You could argue that an exception could be made for searches specifically about FreeBSD 2.2, but the fact that no higher-ranking pages match should take care of that automatically.) In general, I think it's more important for a search engine to produce highly relevant results than it is for it to support all sorts of extra ways to fine-tune a search.
