I do not want xv to create this directory. Thanks. Peter -- Others may know better, but I do not believe you can invoke the "visual schnauzer" without creating the .xvpics directory. Using xv *some pattern* to open an individual image or r series of images from the command line, however, does not create the .xvpics directory.
