To follow up on my own question:

I replaced /usr/bin/awk (which is v3.0.3) with the one (2.15p5) on the latest  
snapshot cd and the problems seems to have gone away. I guess this means that  
the new awk in -current isn't up to snuff yet.

Thank you very much to Walnut Creek for JIT delivery of the 2.2.5 and 3.0  
cd's today. B-)
