bad form replying to my own email but...forgot to mention it's not
starting when I uncomment the two lines in inetd.conf. I get:
[2000/06/18 00:20:18, 1] smbd/server.c:main(641)
  smbd version 2.0.7 started.

  bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use)
