Try the Xfree86 documentation.

All video cards will do text and most will do VESA which is the limit of FreeBSD's
graphical capabilities :)

Well, a newer S3..

You can get a TNT2 M64 PCI for ~AU$120, and an AGP version for ~AU$110. (32Mb RAM
blah blah blah).

These work pretty well in X.. You *will* have trouble finding PCI cards :(

You can get ATI Rage Pro Turbo's for ~AU$80.
