While I am all for closing the list(s) there is this reason you mention. However, can only recall 2 such occurrences this year where a non-subscriber had a question and asked for a CC (there may be others, but these were implicit). On *both* occasions the question was *not* pertinent to -security, so see little actual usefulness to the policy. Am only pointing this out since years back I made the same wish. I think. Do know that I wasn't happy about the subscriber lists being obtainable. Eventually that did change (Hi jmb!). To forestall a useless and OT debate on this, it would be best to hear from -core on a possible policy change. Doubt it will happen, but one can always hope. 8-) (was tempted to CC core, but can live with the current policy) Aw hell. One idea for closing the lists and still allow non-subscribers would use to use an e-mail gateway from the support web pages. Not that I am volunteering code, but just to make a point, since they are in the list of things one should do before contacting a list with questions and then they might do so to the proper list. As for a moderated list, who wants to play babysittter? Didn't think so. ;) Pardon my ramblings, but have been here before, so only thought to present the dead horse for viewing and will bury it once more.
