It allows the bsd machine to show up in network neighbourhood on the windows box and for you to mount drives of the bsd box etc in windows. Using sharity-light you can then mount drives from your windows box on the bsd one or use smbclient to upload/download files (which has a simular interface to ftp). Both are available in the ports collection.
