I read it you don't know why lpd dies and don't know how to
trigger it, but don't have too much space to log a complete life
cycle, either?

Maybe you want to run a (kind of) supervised instance of lpd.  It
could be done by running truss(1) output through "tail -500" into
a result file -- and thus reduce disk space needed while still
getting enough of a traceback to find out what's going on.  Or
run some multilog like tool, look at ports/sysutils/daemontools
if you like DJBware.
