I've been using an external Diamond/Supra (SupraExpress) modem with FreeBSD to dial up my ISP and have not had any problems with it. I'm not saying that it's "better" than other modems, just that it seems to work fine. Concerning Zoom modems which another poster mentioned: I don't know if they've improved in recent years, but in the past Zoom modems were always cheaper - and you got what you paid for - worse performance in comparison tests - so they at least used to be a brand I (personally) would avoid...
