Update: the premature wakeup happens only when a pc card is present. When no card is present the machine suspends as expected. For example, the machine wakes up prematurely when one of these cards is present: IBM ethernet card (no cable attached) or ZOOM modem (no cable attached). I have not tested other cards. Could it be that disabling a cards somehow generates an interrupt that triggers the premature wakeup? Inserting/removing cards all the time would be be rough on my machine, and would be inconvenient when testing network software. Below are a couple fragments from the messages file.
