IMHO, the spash page doesn't have to be in VGA, or even in graphics.  
Some very nicely done ASCII art (maybe a FreeBSD demon or something) 
would be very nice.  It would also be small, 2k at most, and backward 
compatable.  Of course there would still be a switch to turn it off too.
