TapeWare now fully works as backup server on my FreeBSD 4.7 system as 
well as client on a 5.2.1 machine (and a bunch of windows and linux 
clients).
I chose TapeWare because it has the broadest range of supported 
platforms amongst all other software I evaluated, and obviously it even 
works fully functional on all my FreeBSD systems thanks to your advice.
