Most of them only need  the first domain so  it is generally "given" by the
provider when one buy the connection.

It is legitimate but .fr is such a mess that the  fact that the domain is a
registered trade mark helps a lot.

The problem in France is less that it is not free anymore  but more that it
is damn expensive. I  have a domain with  some friends that is reserved but
not delegated. It would cost us 3000 FF to do it :-(
