One thing you could try is get a very current Linux LiveCD distribution (like Knoppix, Kanotix or the Kororaa Xgl Live CD) and check if 3d acceleration seems to work there. If it does not, there's probably no point in updating or trying to make a patch against RELENG_6_1, since the codebase is the mostly the same in Linux and FreeBSD.
